Scuttle is an open source social bookmarking system

It’s true, Scuttle.org is an open source social bookmarking platform. A variety of different social bookmarking services seem to use it, but none I had ever heard of before looking. http://sourceforge.net/projects/scuttle/ is where you can download the code. Is there an implementation out there where you could, say, both search in and by found in both Scuttle and Del.icio.us at the same time? Wouldn’t that be nice.

URLs explain it all

Check it out, was just reading an article that humorously referred to God.org so I thought I’d look it up. Then I looked up God.com. Both religious looking enough. Check out God.us though – the U.S. registered URL. It redirects you to Free-Samples.com – where you’ll find lots of coupons and cheap stuff to buy. Does that make sense or what? The internet is so funny.

AjaxWrite is nice

I’ve used AjaxWrite a number of times now to prepare documents on my Mac for people that I’m guessing are MS Word dependent and it’s great! It’s a project of a group calling itself AjaxLaunch. They aim to launch a new Ajax application every week and have so far succeeded. Their newest is a browser based video editor that seems to be getting good reviews. I’ll be exctied to see what else they come up with.

Get a feed full of inspiration with Net Squared case studies

I just noticed that there’s an easy link to subscribe to new case studies at Net Squared. These are organizations around the world using new web tools in innovative ways. It’s totally inspiring. Here’s the most recent case studies added and here’s the feed URL to subscribe to updates.

If you work for a nonprofit organization doing innovative things online you can write up a case study yourself on the Net Squared site.

Alternatives to Microsoft Word, Excell, PowerPoint

Tech Soup is running an in depth comparative review of the open source and free Open Office compared to Microsoft Office. See also the Mac version of Open Office, NeoOffice. I’m going to be interviewing a man from Open Office as soon as I can get myself together enough to make it happen. It’ll be in the Net Squared interviews section. Did you know that Open Office has an estimated 40 million users and 60 language projects underway?

Maybe it’s naughty and I ought to just forge headfirst into the open source world, but I feel like I need compatibility with Microsoft format every once in awhile at least. In that spirit I’m going to check out ThinkFree Office Online. See also AJAXwrite (thanks Noka for pointing that one out).

Hosting your own blog or using a hosted service: the pros and cons

One of the questions a new blogger or blogging organization has to make is whether to use a hosted service (like blogger.com, typepad.com, etc.) or to rent server space and host the blog yourself. Perhaps the most accurate way to describe this is to call the options a. hosted blogging software and b. unhosted blogging software. Here are some pros and cons both directions, based on my experience and thoughts.

700 Web2.0 sites “reviewed by hand”

Check it out, this is great. Not the be-all end all list, but pretty cool. Funny omissions: upcoming.org not in events. Podshow not in podcasts. NetSquared not in philanthropy, ouch – maybe next year. See any others? I love that Blummy was a winner! I use it all the time.

This is a great peek into the field. Quite a few I’ve never seen before. The company that came up with this site, SEOMoz, is brilliant. I found it via Digg.
